disclaimer - i grew up and still live one block from sarcone's, so i definitely have definite opinions. however, i hate to invalidate people, but someone below commented on the sesame seeds being an odd touch. sesame seeds are actually pretty common on certain types of italian bread. and italian bread is supposed to be dense and crusty, not soft. but i digress.

you cannot possibly go wrong if you order one of the following: the junkyard, the uncle louie, the classic italian, the old school italian or the spinach hoagies. the hoagies here are spectacular, though get them to share since they are incredibly filling.

fyi - if you don't like sarcone's bread my other three favorites are ianelli's, cacia's and faragalli's. guaranteed one of these will make you happy. :)

Sarcone's Deli has my favorite bread of all time.  I'm vegetarian and their mixed cheese hoagies and the exotic veggie are AMAZING.  I will admit though i hate their hours and I prefer primos (which use their rolls) which is my reasoning for the 4 stars.

Sarcone's has the best Hoagie hands down EVER.  Their bread is delicious everything they make there is out of this world.  Usually when I get a hoagie from a deli or anywhere else I usually like to have a bag of chips with it but with a sarcone's hoagie you can feel compeletly satisfied with just that.  They are mouth watering and I want one as I write this review.  They have franchise opportunities available and since I work in NJ there is one down the street which makes it even easier to enjoy a delicious Sarcone's Hoagie.

Sarcone's Deli is delicious. The little corner deli with character is always packed with people on a Saturday afternoon looking to get an authentic Italian sandwich. There is always a great variety of specials, the Exotic Veggie is out of this world, and you can't go wrong with getting the classic Italian Hoagie. Vegetarian or meat lover, mild or spicy there is a sandwich that will keep you going back. The staff there is very friendly, but expect a wait if you go on the weekend! Best place to get a sandwich as you are heading to the ballpark!

Not to go against the grain here, but the one thing that seemed to be the strong point (the Best bread in America), was actually the most disappointing thing about the sandwich. Service was prompt and personal...sandwich flew out of the kitchen. Not alot of seating outside, but it was a busy Saturday afternoon.

I ordered the Original Italian...the meat, wonderful...cheese, strong and flavorful...oil/vinegar & crispy veg, but the bread was very hard...crust was beyond the normally enjoyable crunch and actually nearly left marks on your gum and the roof of your mouth. Maybe they had a bad batch of bread that day...hope so. The sesame seeds were an odd touch too, but that part of their style I guess.

I'll give it another go, but check the bread...

When it's on the specials board, be sure to try their exotic veggie sandwich.  It's made out of breaded eggplant, broccoli raab, roasted red peppers, mozzarella, and some sort to delicious cheesy spread that is hopefully less artificial than wiz.  It is delicious.  It is so delicious that I want to use words like "magical" and "possibly the best sandwich ever" to describe it, but I don't think that would even begin to describe this sandwich's amazingness.

I've never actually set foot into this establishment, but I helped my friend move into her new place off of Washington ave. After a hard day of moving beds, dressers and TVs we were paid us off with hoagies she had gotten from Sarcone's.  This was one tasty mother. The bread was amazing to say the least. All around it was a delicious beast.

once you enter the store you could play Dean Martins Roma song and smell the whiff of Italian Processed meats and the mozarella marinated on olive oil and herbs ..the hoagies have the best bread (it is!!) and the staff is nice as well. I had the Italian and it was made to your liking (it may take time for them to make it) probably they give every hoagie an artful thing to it.  Next to order for me is the Tony Soprano....which is the same sandwich he ordered at Satriale's before the FBI guy told him he was gonna be hit by the New York Crew. Sarcone's Deli my kinda hoagie shop. one thing bad though...they price pepsi in cans for a buck each!!but hey its a hoagie shop not Shop Rite!! I can handle that.

Let's be honest: they make great hoagies and bake their own great bread, but why does it take so long? The waiting, as Tom Petty once wrote, may be the hardest part, but we're talking sandwiches, not brain surgery.

So while I usually end up eating another Chickie's Special, I give high marks to Sarcone's Old Fashioned Italian. I'd eat there more often if I could just get out of the sandwich shop in less than half an hour.

I would kill a man for a loaf of Sarcone's bread! The BEST bread ever.  Also they have a location in Cherry Hill.  They truck the bread there from South Philly.  It's all about the water when making bread and Joey Sarcone has something magical coming out of his tap!

I need to eat there for lunch one day to sample all their hoagies.

Sarcone's food is like an Italian spin-kick right in the mouth.

If Italy produced any type of ninja, superhero,  subversive fighting force etc... it would be comprised completely by Sarcone's sandwiches and said sandwiches next of kin.

Homemade sandwiches on some of the best bread in the world, filled with the gourmet staples of the Italian market make for some of the best eats in Philadelphia.

You may ask "How do I know this?, How am I qualified to make this claim?"

They call me Super-wop. I am 100% Italian myself, a connoisseur of everything that is 9th St, and share the same name as the proprietor of this particular establishment.

Other than the potential that I am really an actual ninja sandwich who learned to use the computer to write this review, my cred's are pretty solid.

I will have to admit that their chicken parm was really, really good.  In fact, just thinking about it made me notch the stars up to 5.

Again, this place suffers from smallsignitis.  I'm not sure if there's a shortage of sign makers in this town but a 8.5 x 11" flyer is not a menu.  I thought that a white board above the oven was the menu until afterwards, while waiting for my sandwich, did I realize that the piece of paper taped to the refrigerator was the complete menu.

Regardless, the food was outstanding.  Truly a mom and pop operation.

Some of the best sandwiches in the WORLD!  Sarcones and White House in Atlantic City are the 2 best I have ever had.  My favorite sandwich here is the Old Fashioned Italian.  I have also tried the Sarcone Special Hoagie and the Sonnys Special but always come back to the Old Fashioned.  Perfect, and I mean perfect bread, great balance of meat, cheese and oil/vinegar.  A simply amazing sandwich.  I would seriously pay around 50 bucks to have one of their sandwiches shipped out here.  For all of you that live in Phila. you guys are lucky!  I wish we had something like that out here in San Diego but nothing even comes close!

This is a serious sandwich.  The bread is crusty and substantial, and they don't skimp on the meats.  With prosciutto, Genoa salami, and sharp provolone, I was in heaven.  After eating half of a medium sized hoagie, I was full but scarfed down the other half immediately because it was so good.

Damn good hoagies. And compared to anything I could get in LA or Boston, they'd definitely be at the top of the list. But with Chickie's just a couple blocks away I gotta rank them a notch below, if only for the garlic paste they put on everything. I'm not into that, but they'll leave it off if you ask. But really, 4 stars is highly critical. Just trying to say they aren't my favorite. I do love the Sarcone's bread, and if it was exclusive to their deli it would have to be my favorite. But you can get the bread at a lot of the area delis that are just a little better at building a sandwich.

Sarcone's may sell the ultimate Philly sandwich. Hoagies that are perfection. So many shops would benefit from the simple ingredients and integrity approach that Sarcone practices.

Just had the Italian Market hoagie.  I'm inclined to give Sarcone's a 3.5 as the bread was average at best.  However, the flavors of the meat, cheese and herbs was excellent.  I bought my sandwich late in the day, so perhaps that's why the bread was a little unfresh.  Not quite crunchy, but not exactly soft and warm either.  Anyways, average bread, but great flavors in the sandwich.  Worth another try, albeit earlier in the day.

I'm on an admittedly leisurely hunt for veggie sandwiches throughout the city, and so I went to check out what options this hoagie hamlet had.  I need to go back to try the spinach hoagie and the garlic lovers' and maybe the tomato/mozz, but today I had the grilled veggie.

it was one of the spiciest things I've ever eaten.  It was really good- beautifully roasted eggplant, red and yellow peppers, and mother f&*^%$ing hot long hots.  There is a star next to them on the menu to tell them it is spicy, but I just didn't realize it was going to be THAT spicy.  Yowza.  Going for 5 stars even though I couldn't finish the damn thing-- my liter bottle of water was kicked and I was actually kind of shaken by the spiciness-- but I say more is more, and if you're going to be spicy, be debilitatingly spicy, so more power to Sarcone's.

Edits to come evenutally as I try more of their hoagies.

EDIT:  Important news: Sarcone's now has (or at least has on special, right now), the KING of all vegetarian sandwiches, eggplant parm.  OMG, so good.  Nothing can really be said about it other than that it is breaded, sweet, crispy, tomatoey, cheesy, bready perfection.  Only possible drawback is that you 100% have to take a nap right after you eat it.

EDIT II: BUT-- I have to take this place down a notch because their eggplant, when not breaded/fried, is undercooked.  It feels like eating a sponge.  That kind of thing gives eggplant a bad name.  Skip it if it's not the eggplant parm kind.

A really great joint. I'm going 4 instead of 5 stars cause ordering and waiting can be a pain, especially on nice days, but I don't blame them for that. Just a warning. Great crusty bread and attention to detail. Watch the line (no cutting!) and listen for your name, cause if you miss out, your sandwich could sit there a while.
Oh, and "outdoor seating" constitutes two small tables, FYI.

Now I can die.

At first I must admit that I was skeptical.  I'm from the land of the hoagie.  Some south Philly joint is gunna make the world's best.  Fuggedaboutit.

But much to my surprise, this is the real deal.  I was totally blown away.  I watched as they carefully prepared my Old Fashioned Italian, which was meticulously assembled.  The service was very good and pleasant.  But I wasn't there for service.  I was there for the best hoagie in 'Merica.  When my medium showed up wrapped in paper, I squeezed the bread, which seemed kinda soft.  But as I took my first bite, I was very pleased indeed.  Very nice.

This was hands down the best hoagie I've had, and I am a finicky hoagie connoisseur.  My hat is off to Sarcone's Deli.

As I said in the beginning, now I can die.

PS - Attire?  What are you bloody kidding me?  It's a deli!

Day 2 - You know I had to go back.  They never dissapoint.  Very nice.  Get the Olde Fashioned Italian.  Fuggedaboutit!

I absolutely love Sarcone's Deli. The hoagies are, hands down, the best in the world. Unfortunately for me, I live 3000 miles from this place and only get to dream about them.

In fact, on the very rare occasion that I'm in Philly, I always buy 2-3 to take on the plane and I survive for about 2 days eating only them.

When someone from out of town asks me for a steak sandwich shop recommendation, I tell them to get a hoagie from Sarcone's instead. This Italian Market staple consistenly puts out some of the finest in the city, and offers such a wonderful selection of tastes that a steak just comes up short. I would not care to guess which is healthier for you, but for tastebud  zazz, a superb hoagie hammers the cheesesteak any day.
Sarcone's is a family place and acts like it. If you're going on a Sunday, don't dally, and better yet, phone ahead. They get a shipment of amazing hoagie rolls from the Sarcone's Bakery down the street each morning, and close shop when the bread is gone. If there is an Eagles game on tv, count on the bread running out even quicker.

One of my favorites on offer is the C.C., a zesty combination of homemade roast beef, sauteed spinach, balsamic and cremosa provalone, all on Sarcone's famous crusty, seeded bread. Even if you don't really dig spinach, this thing will make you a believer. Combine with a root beer and bag of Herr's Sour Cream & Onion chips and you're good to go.
The Old-Fashioned is a more traditional sandwich, done with exotic hams and artery clogging salamis. Prosciutto, hot Coppa and more of that crumbly provolone will leave little strings of fat stuck between your teeth, but it's so worth it.
There is a vegetarian option as well, so there's no excuse not to try Sarcone's. It might just make you give up cheesesteaks.

Sarcone's near the Italian Market has the perfect little Italian man sittin' out front enjoying the humidity (see my pic) and the perfect Italian hoagies inside.  I preferred to be inside waiting for my hoagie to be made.  Smells of the fresh bread from their bakery... the saltiness of the meat, cheeses, vinegar.  I loved it!   They could tell I was from out of town, I actually had to read the deli menu.  Nowhere to sit inside... just the few tables outside.  But it doesn't matter.  It's definitely worth the stop for a big slice of heaven.

Compared to Roxie's and Estella's in SF, this particular sandwich making deli ranks right up there. Quick and friendly service, great variety and fresh ingredients. I heard good things about the fresh mozzarella so I ordered a small "Sinatra" sandwich. The proscuitto was quite juicy and the spinach and mozzarella slices were an excellent pairing.

My cousin's pretty darn lucky to have this establishment right around the corner from his place! As an out-of-towner, I'm glad he suggested I eat here. A great slice of Philly.

The absolute best hoagies I've ever eaten came from Sarcone's.
I've worked my way through most of the menu - all the sandwiches are delicious - the Old Fashioned Italian is my favorite.  The Booch is a close second.  Try the Garlic Lover's, just don't plan on being around anyone for 18 - 24 hours.  Seriously, you will have a five foot garlic force field surrounding your body.  Vampires all the way in South Jersey will wither when you speak.
I'm a native and have eaten a lot of hoagies in my day - the subtle refinements of their sandwiches really make the difference.

Now THIS is my kind of sandwich shop.  Crusty bread (seeded or seedless) houses the finest and most delicious ingredients.  Proscuitto, broccoli rabe, roasted red peppers, asparagus, roast beef, fresh turkey...you name it. Sarcone's offers gourmet sides of different pasta salads, marinated vegetables and fresh mozz. The bread is absolutely perfect, baked fresh on their bakery premises further down the street. They have options for both carnivores and vegivores alike--and their veggie sandwich has more to offer than a few sad leaves of lettuce, green peppers and not quite ripe tomatoes like many other Italian sandwich shops.

Don't think, however, that you can just stroll leisurely to Sarcones late in the afternoon and expect them to still have bread.  These little bastards sell out faster than Beck tickets in 2002 (I couldn't get one for the life of me) so make sure you get there in plenty of time. Also, don't think you're going to eat in the shop, it's take-out only.

I'd give them six stars if I could.
